1997 British Lions
In less than two weeks time the 2009 British Lions start their campaign in South Africa. I’m going to cover a few games but also had the privileged to cover the 1997 British Lions tour to South Africa.
In those days we still used film like the Fuji 800 ASA. The light at the stadiums were so poor that we had to push the film one stop to 1600 ASA and still the maximum shutter speed was around 1/400sec. The result was a lot of grain and a lot of movement in the images.
This is James Small tackled by Lawrence Dallaglio. At the back from left is Andre Venter, Andre Snyman and Henry Honniball. I used a Nikon F5 and a Nikon 600mm lens. I still got this lens and camera. The 600mm i’m still using and in fact used it a few days ago at a IPL t20 cricket match. The F5 is on display in my studio and if necessary i can use it as a weapon so hard it is(Titanium casing for the view finder and so on).
This is Jeremy Guscott centre of the 1997 British Lions. I remember how desperately i wanted a nice photo of him because he was such an amazing player. Up to date he is still one of my all time favorites.
